UKEA relieves hunger in Wajir
Good luck school Bahati School they call it. Good Luck School! Good luck? Yes, that's what the parents who survived the drought in Wajir feel. ..” We have lost all our cattle and shoats. We lost everything, but we have been lucky to reach here and now even our children can go to school”... And the children? They love it!
Especially since the school feeding program is working. School feeding is one of the measures the GoK (Government of Kenya) has taken to work on many Millennium Development Goals at the same time. However in 2006 Bahati did not yet profit from that program because the school took of only end of 2005. Early 2006 the School grew very fast when the drop-outs of pastoralism started to settle near Bahati. School funding amounting to 1000 ksh per child per year passed by Bahati School in 2006. Luckily the head teacher is a good networker. He has earned his reputation as a reliable person. He had helped the Netherlands based Foundation for the Welfare of Wajir for many years, without ever asking anything for himself. Welfare Wajir was able to respond quickly to his outcry and UKEA came up with half the money needed: 1000 Euros.
On the photo you see Miriam running home with her portion. She is going to share her bowl with her younger brother. The only food they would get that day.
Good Luck?
Yes, but also responsible world citizenship, and we need more of that.
